The Story We Live Inside
We live inside of a story. Whether it is visible or invisible, we live inside of a story. That story is always a story of value. It might be a story of no value. It might be a story of pseudo value. It is often a story in which value has not been worked out, in which we do not actually understand what value is, where there is no clear direction. But we always live inside of a story of value.
In order to respond to the great inquiry of your life, Who must I become?, you need to actually access and live in the most coherent story of value that exists. You need to live in the deepest inclusion of goodness, truth, and beauty. Not which values you are choosing to argue about with someone else. The core source of value underneath values. The first principles and first values. The shared grammar of value that we all share.
The old religions gave local answers and claimed only they had the answer to that coherence. Then we moved into modernity, which said: forget the bigger questions, let us be successful. It created a structure of rivalries and conflict governed by win-lose metrics. It created some good things. But ultimately it left us dissociated, alienated, empty. Then postmodernity deconstructed everything. You cannot just claim things as values, it said. You have to show what the source of value actually is. We never did that.
So here we are. Unable to respond to the personal crisis of meaning, desire, intimacy, imagination, and purpose. And unable to respond to what we call in CosmoErotic Humanism the second shock of existence: the potential death of our humanity. The meta-crisis. The collapse of interior technologies in the face of exploding and wildly destructive exterior ones.
The only way to respond to them is not a piecemeal response. It is a fundamental stepping into a new story of value.
